Foundations of Bank ALM Short Course

The recent Foundations of Bank ALM Short Course was a great success.  Students spent three days covering the core topics of Treasury including IRRBB, Capital and Liquidity.  One of the students said “This was a great course and I would highly recommend it.  For someone new to the industry it was very useful.  It is set at the right level for most to understand.  Coupling the theory with the practitioners really brought the course to life.”

The next course takes place at the end of November.

The John Cummins Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement – January 2022

For the first time, there were joint winners of The John Cummins Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement for Course 9 of the CertBALM® qualification.  On Thursday evening, at the ALMA Conference both Felix Prevost from HSBC and Daniella Ringrose from Nationwide Building Society won the award.  A great achievement!
Felix commented, “Even during the course I was already able to start putting into practice learnings from the reading materials and review sessions. I enjoyed exploring practical applications with the course mentors, who brought a treasure trove of industry knowledge and experience. With such a challenging curriculum, it’s an honour to win this prestigious recognition.”
Daniella commented, “CertBALM® really helped me to understand the links between the different risks faced by a bank Treasury. So much so that I’ve recently had the confidence to take on a new role in a completely different Treasury risk discipline. Being awarded the John Cummins award, alongside Felix, was the cherry on the cake; it’s great to know that all the hard work really did pay off!”
Huge congratulations to both Felix and Daniella from everyone at ALMA.

The John Cummins Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement – June 2021

Last week we announced the latest recipient of the John Cummins Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement for the group of CertBALM® students who received their final results in April.  Ben Reilly from HSBC was awarded the trophy outside the HSBC building in Canary Wharf on Friday.  Runners-up for the trophy were Peter Lighting of NatWest Markets and Eino Hinkkanen of Nordea.  Chris Blake, Co-Chair and Education Director of ALMA, commented, “This is the first person I have seen in a suit and tie since the start of lockdown!  Clearly this is the key to winning the trophy!  Congratulations to Ben from everyone at ALMA on a great achievement.”

On receiving the trophy, Ben Reilly was completely delighted, commenting, “It was a delightful surprise to find out I won the John Cummins Award.  I already had a good knowledge of both capital supply and demand, but the CertBALM® has been my introduction to funding and liquidity.  The Case Study especially brought all the elements of Asset-Liability Management together and helped me develop new skills in multi-dimensional optimisation that I am now putting into practice professionally.  I am sure this will help take my career to the next level.  Even compared to the ACA and CFA I found the course challenging and was happy to pass – let alone achieve the top CertBALM® mark globally.”

The John Cummins Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement – Feb 2021

Chris Blake and Charlie Wood used the ALMA Conference last week to announce the winner of the prestigious Outstanding Academic Achievement Award for the 8th cohort of the CertBALM® qualification as Jodie Parker of Secure Trust Bank.

Jodie commented “I am delighted to have won the John Cummins Award and extend my thanks to everyone involved in running every aspect of the course.  Working in Finance for a relatively small institution, I have previously only had a broad overview of capital and liquidity.  The CertBALM® has given me a much deeper understanding of how the banking sector works which will be invaluable whichever route I choose to take in my career.  The Certificate is extremely well structured and very comprehensive, and the fact that teaching comes from real industry practitioners really sets it apart.  Despite the pandemic meaning my cohort never met in person (yet!), the course has allowed me to connect with others across the industry and I’m looking forward to enjoying a drink together when we can!”

Steve Heeley, Group Financial Controller at Secure Trust Bank commented, “We’re all delighted that Jodie has won the award for Outstanding Academic Achievement for the CertBALM®.  When added to her excellent results in her accounting qualification, this gives Jodie a great range of skills that she can apply throughout her career at Secure Trust Bank.  Well done Jodie!”

Robin Windle of MUFG Securities and Vikram Ravi of TD Securities took second and third place respectively.
